About Peter Whiteley
Peter has been a cyclist most of his life. In his early days he rode a bike almost daily as transport to school and for taking weekend trips with his mates to far flung parts of Melbourne. His recent participation in the Round the Bay in a Day ride caused him to reflect on his first trip to Werribee on a single speed clunker when he was a school kid.
Like many of us the discovery of cars and the opposite sex in his twenties pushed bike riding into the background but later as a family man he discovered the pleasure of cycling with his wife and children. After a career of over 20 years in public service he walked away from a middle management job and he and his wife bought and ran a bike shop. His interest in cycling led to the change but it was especially during that time that his enjoyment of cycling was re-kindled.
He used his bike for commuting to work, he and his wife participated in organised rides in Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand, they were part of a local cycling group and several Audax rides were undertaken, including the wonderful Alpine.
After leaving the shop Peter continued to work in the bicycle industry and has continued to ride regularly. He has done more organised rides with Bike SA’s Outback Odyssey from Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges a couple of times being a recent highlight.
Now semi retired he continues to enjoy hopping on the road or mountain bike on a regular basis as a way to enjoy keeping fit and looks forward to introducing his grand children to the fun of cycling when they are old enough.
